Cover Design
How the cover looks is by far the most important factor in a book's success. People simply buy what looks best. Books that are sold in brick and mortar bookstores compete with every other book on the shelf. The ones that look the best get picked up first. And even then, you only have 30 seconds to grab a person's interest.
The cover is not something to be glossed over. Without an outstanding cover, a book is almost sure to do poorly compared to similar books. A cover does not need to be complex in order to be effective, but it does need to communicate and be attractive to the buyer.
I am very aware of the power design has on buying decisions. As a consumer, I know what makes me more likely to buy a book. As a designer, I know how to get a cover to speak to its target audience.
